7 Drawing Tips All Artists Need

Whether you’re a budding artists or an artist with more experience, these tips will surely help you when drawing.

I’ve been using the following tips when drawing, so I know for a fact that they do work and make drawing so much easier while also improving your art!

1 – Using a Grid or Guidelines

Grids are my go to for achieving an accurate drawing, and no it’s not cheating! I’m still doing the drawing, not tracing it, the grid lines merely help me maintain accuracy.
If you not happy with the grid technique, worry not, there is another trick for you! Guide lines! These provide a close accuracy. But the require angle measuring and a steady hand to get straight lines.

2Thumbnail sketches

Sketching out a few little ‘thumbnail’ sketches before starting your drawing is a fundamental tip! By doing this, you’re sketching out a few different ideas from which you can choose the best one and work from there. This saves you from starting a drawing on your fancy paper, only to be displeased with something and then have to start over. This is sort of a mind map or draft of your drawing.

3 – Pencil Pressure

When drawing its vital to keep your pencil pressure light. Don’t draw dark! A lot of beginner artists make this mistake of pressing hard with their pencil, which results in a dark line that is difficult to erase. So always remember to keep your pencil light on the page – it’s easier to build up value and get darker than it is to remove value.

4 – Line Weight

Line weight can make or break your drawing. By having the same line weight throughout your drawing it results in a flat looking image as seen on the left. But by varying the line weight- light for the objects in the distance and heavier/darker for the objects that are closer you create a sense of depth!

5 – Blending Tools

Blending Tools – a must have for any artist! While it’s okay to use your finger, I strongly advise against it as sometimes oils from your skin can transfer onto your pages resulting in a dark splotch. I find it’s better to use blending tools such a paper stumps, tissue, cotton buds and even a paintbrush to blend and get a smooth look!

6 – Kneaded Eraser

I boldly claim this to be ‘An Artists Best Friend!’ This is honestly one of the best tools when drawing. It lifts like a dream without leaving those irritating little shaving like other erasers do. If you don’t have one already, what are you waiting for? Go get one!

7 – Have Fun!

This is the most important tip! Never forget to have fun when drawing. If you enjoy the process the end result will reflect your joy!
